The COLDwater service is funded by the EU-PolarNet 2 project, in the scope of the European Polar Research Programme needs. It is led by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in Spain, in partnership with the University of Oulu in Finland.

The project aims to survey the presence of cyanobacterial toxins and their producers, evaluating the potential risk for Arctic residents and Antarctic expeditioners. Given the unpredictability of toxic bloom events, developing tools to inform decision-making bodies based on the needs of the polar regions is essential to ensure the economy and sustainable growth of the population.

A white paper with the project outcomes is now available. Additionally, a new website and X account were created to centralise information about the project and experts on freshwater resources.
