EU-PolarNet will end in December 2024. The symposium “Together for the poles – Advancing European Polar Research through Collaboration“, taking place on 19 November 2024, will provide the opportunity to share our results and experiences from nine years of collaborative work and introduce the future European cooperation platform, the European Polar Coordination Office (EPCO). The symposium will also stimulate a dialogue between European and national policy makers, polar scientists, industries, local communities and civil society to explore how a stronger European cooperation in Polar Research can benefit science and societal needs.

» Arctic Congress Bodø 2024

Nord University will host the Arctic Congress 2024 Bodø, bringing UArctic, IASSA and High North Dialogue together as partners, May 29-June 3, 2024 in Bodø, Norway.
Call for Session Proposals is now open until June 15, 2023
UArctic partners with the International Congress of Arctic Social Sciences (ICASS 2024) and the High North Dialogue 2024 as part of this joint event, with a common Congress program, as well as each organization’s individual Assembly and business meetings.
This will be a showcase of Arctic cooperation, and will reduce travel expenses and time for many participants who would participate both UArctic Congress and ICASS or High North Dialogue. In 2024 Bodø City is European Cultural Capital, which will provide an excellent frame for the UArctic/ICASS/HND events.

The Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) 2024, including the Arctic Observing Summit, will be held in Edinburgh, Scotland. ASSW 2024 will take place from 21 – 29 March 2024
The United Kingdom has been an IASC member country since 1991, and this will be the second time that the UK will host the ASSW, with the first one being in 2000, in Cambridge.
The Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) was initiated by IASC in 1999 to provide opportunities for coordination, cooperation and collaboration between various scientific organizations involved in Arctic research and to economize on travel and time. Over the years, the summit evolved into the most important annual gathering of the Arctic research organizations. The summit is organized by an International Coordination Group and any organization engaged in supporting and facilitating Arctic research may participate.

European Research Community Priorities for Polar Research: EU-PolarNet’s contribution to the ICARP IV process
EU-PolarNet 2 is a consortium of 25 partners representing EU member states and associated partners, with the aim of establishing and sustaining an inclusive platform for the co-development and advancement of European Polar research actions and to give evidence-based advice to policymaking processes. To achieve this goal, EU-PolarNet 2 has six specific objectives with measurable outcomes assigned to the respective work packages that will address them.
One of these objectives was to identify priorities and key societally relevant Polar research themes. This task builds on the Integrated European Polar Research Programme (EPRP), the output of the previous project and national research strategies. For this purpose, a Polar Expert Group (PEG) was established, which together with representatives of other stakeholders took part in a retreat (Venice, San Servolo, June 2023). The retreat specified and customised the research themes and formulated future research actions.
The research prioritisation action was implemented through a three-step process:
(1) Relevant background documents, service projects, stakeholder meetings, surveys from within the EU Polar Cluster and a consultation from a specially constituted Polar Expert Group (PEG), contributed to creating a starting information base;
(2) A deep and extensive analysis based on an objective text data mining methodology reduced the very large list of topics into research needs and associated key questions;
(3) During the thematic retreat, a group of experts, using the results from step 2, consolidated and ranked the relevant topics. A short and exhaustive description of each selected topic was made based on a defined template.
The aim of this session is:
- to present details of the three-step process methodology that was developed and implemented for the prioritisation process.
- present the outcomes achieved during the prioritisation exercise.
- Stimulate a fruitful bottom-up discussion with the wider international science community to collect further comments.
The session will also be useful in creating the first connections between the metrics of EU-PolarNet 2 (research needs and key questions) with those of ICARP IV (7 topic areas of interest). Thus, securing the results of the EU-PolarNet 2 prioritisation exercise as an important contribution to the ICARP IV process.

» Policy Briefing: Recent changes in the Antarctic and their impacts on Europe

This event is organised by the Horizon2020-funded EU Polar Cluster projects SO-CHIC, EU-PolarNet 2 with TiPACCS, and PROTECT. The event takes place in the context of increasing pressure on the processes regulating ocean circulation, increased melting of Antarctic sea ice and ice shelves, and increasing scientific awareness of the importance of the region to Europe. Our goal is to present relevant insights to European policy makers on the importance of the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic to Europe, for example, via potential input to sea level rise. We aim to highlight the accompanying implications for European policy and Antarctic research.
